Rod Mason, a talented trad cornetist from England who is based in Germany, explores 11 Jelly Roll Morton songs on this enjoyable LP. Mason imported pianist Ray Foxley from England and Foxley contributed an original in Morton's style, "The Frenchman's." In addition, Foxley wrote all of the arrangements, most of which are based to an extent on Morton's recordings. The octet is full of excellent musicians who understand Jelly Roll's music and are able to improvise credibly within the genre. Highlights include "Grandpa's Spells," "King Porter Stomp," "Frog-I-More Rag," and "Wolverine Blues." Mason and his musicians (listed as his Hot Seven) do justice to Jelly Roll Morton's timeless music.
