CEMA Special Markets' The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down is a skimpy budget-line collection that may contain eight of the Band's greatest songs -- "This Wheel's on Fire," "The Weight," "Rag, Mama, Rag," "The Shape I'm In," "Don't Do It," "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down," "Across the Great Divide," and "Life Is a Carnival" -- but it contains only eight songs, which is unacceptable even for a budget-line compilation. Sure, any casual listener on a tight budget who lays down his or her cash for this disc probably won't be disappointed (this is pretty great music, after all), but there are better ways to hear the Band at their peak.
