Baritonist Gerry Mulligan's 1958-59 pianoless quartet with trumpeter Art Farmer, bassist Bill Crow and drummer Dave Bailey did not last that long and only cut one studio album, making this live CD rather valuable. Six of the numbers from the quartet's studio record are heard in fresh versions; plus, there are two selections ("I Can't Get Started" and "Spring Is Sprung") that find Mulligan switching to piano. However, it is the former performances (particularly "As Catch Can," "Just In Time" and a lengthy "Blueport") that are of greatest interest. The interplay between Mulligan and Farmer in the near-classic group makes this an easily recommended set for straight-ahead jazz collectors.
