The New Earl Hines Trio Review

by Scott Yanow

A relaxed and at times lazy set by pianist Earl Hines and his 1964 trio with bassist Ahmed Abdul Malik and drummer Oliver Jackson, the overly concise performances (only one of the dozen songs is over four minutes) contain no real surprises. Hines takes a few pleasing (but forgettable) vocals and since he recorded so frequently during the 1964-77 period, there are many better sets to acquire before this okay LP.
