The Music Band was War's way of telling their history through music -- a two-part concept album about the band themselves. It was a bit of a self-indulgent idea, but it revitalized the band to a certain extent, since they wanted to have good music to accompany their story. Unfortunately, they didn't write any great new songs, but the grooves were solid and the record was frequently interesting, if not always successful -- the kind of album that won't convince doubters, but will provide the dedicated with some interesting moments. Rhino reissued the two double albums as a double-disc set, The Music Band, in 1999.
