A primal slice of rock history, The Lost Tapes is an unvarnished, unmixed, and unrecognized document of the West Michigan rock underground before there was one. Making Tad sound like Barry Manilow, these covers are all bruised knuckles and bloody fingertips. A torrid rendition of the Stooges' "Death Trip" sits next to pedestrian versions of Ramones and Wire (via Henry Rollins) favorites, all in overdriven mono. The recording ends with a skeletal rendition of "New Dawn Fades" that is downright eerie, and is the last will and testament of unrealized dreams in small-town America.
