AllMusic Review by

The most famous group known as the Lively Ones were a surf band. This band, however, features three guys named David and one gal Gayle. Although two of them had sung together in 1964 and led a choir, the group formed at Baylor University and created their own hippie-religious brand of "folk" music.

Word Records of Waco, Texas was responsible for many strange records in the late 1960s, and The Lively Ones, while cheesy, certainly has its moments of strangeness. The jacket shows them all crammed into some sort of beach buggy (in conscious imitation of the Monkees). The record is significant for capturing all of the 1960s in one package: from the loss of innocence (Monkees) to trendy hippie influences (guitar style) to what was then called the Jesus Freak movement (resulting from disaffection with the free love and drug culture). It is doubtful anyone would take enjoy this at face value, but as a funny oddity and period piece, it's hard to beat.
