James Bolden is a Texas-based bluesman with a personable and expressive voice who also plays guitar solos that are both subtle and fiery. On this CD he is featured in a variety of blues styles, from the swing of "You're Barking Up the Wrong Tree" to blues ballads, introspective pieces, forceful struts, and a very enjoyable instrumental version of "Please Send Me Someone to Love." Bolden is joined by keyboardist Robert Cummings, electric bassist Art Hoff, drummer Geronimo Carkieron, and three saxophonists, plus the background vocals of Natic McHenry. The leader arranged and produced all of the music, which gives listeners an opportunity to hear (due to its variety) the state of the blues in 2001. Recommended.
