Sometimes a budget label yields a great work (probably through licensing). The general style and title Mr. Latin's Mambo suggest it came out on the heels of 1962's Mr. Latin on Atlantic. Rene Bloch hits hard on ten tracks, of which only one, "Lamento Latino," is an original (also the only downtempo piece). Strongest are the two lead mambos and the two pachangas. Of all the major New York Latin stars to attempt pachanga, Bloch is one of the few to get it right and make it interesting. One of these is by Jose Fajardo, another master of the pachanga. It is a shame there are no liner notes listing personnel or session anecdotes, but fans of Bloch definitely will want to have this recording.
