Few musicians have ever remained so identified with a singular style, yet made as many innovations within it as Astor Piazzolla. Piazzolla experimented with jazz, rock, and pop themes, recorded with Gary Burton and Kip Hanrahan, varied tango's harmonic options, and expanded its melodic sources. He was a brillant bandoneon player, getting from the extremely restrictive four keyboard instrument new tones, phrases, and lines that had not even been considered, let alone executed. American Clave's three-disc retrospective covering Piazzolla's entire label work merits its title; the opening volume alone, Tango: Zero Hour, reaffirms it.
