Irving Berlin's song catalog, while prolific and immortal, has never been exactly thought of as prime fodder for jazz interpretation. But this delightful 16-track compilation shows that the right Berlin song ("Blue Skies," "Cheek to Cheek," and "What'll I Do?," just for starters) in the hands of players like Joe Pass, John Coltrane, Ron Affif, Blue Mitchell, Gil Evans, Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie and Dave Brubeck can produce decidedly wonderful results. Tracks from Billy Taylor, Zoot Sims, Benny Carter, Elmo Hope, Sonny Rollins and Hank Crawford round out this interesting collection.
