Nearing the end of a long series of a mod albums for Verve, the word must have been handed to Winding to do some snazzier cover tunes. The In Instrumentals does not stick to the truly "in" mod tunes, nor does it do much with its standard pop and rock tunes. The original "Sign of the Times" became a standard and made the rounds of the several brass artists associated with Verve and Claus Ogerman. "Mohair Sam" and "Foxy" are two that reach out to the rock audience with electric guitar. But let's face it: the music manager of New York's Playboy Club may have been "in," but he wasn't exactly hip, at least not on this album.
