AllMusic Review by

Before becoming a successful session guitarist and longtime member of the Sons of the Pioneers, Roy Lanham led his own variety act, the Whippoorwills. A top-notch instrumental and vocal combo, the Whipps covered everything from Western swing to pop and jazz, as well as virtuoso instrumentals that showcased Lanham's unique guitar stylings. Hard Life Blues collects 31 recordings for the Standard Transcription Service from 1950 and, because the group made few commercial recordings, is a rare document of their vocal sound. Occasionally compared to the Modernaires, the Whippoorwills managed to create a distinct musical personality despite their rampant diversity. No other release better demonstrates the range of Lanham's talents as guitarist, songwriter, and arranger.
