The compilers of this brief disc from Delta Records have given themselves a pretty tall order to fill by calling it Greatest Jazz Standards, and it should come as no surprise that the results hardly fulfill the promise the title implies. Certainly "Someday My Prince Will Come" (done here by the Bill Evans Trio), "'Round About Midnight" (probably the best known Thelonious Monk composition, presented here by Dave Liebman), and "My Funny Valentine" (voiced here in heart-breaking fashion by Chet Baker) qualify as jazz standards by any reckoning, but the other choices here leave a lot of room for debate. Title aside, the music here is solid, and it is wonderful to hear tracks like Elvin Jones' "Harmonique."
