AllMusic Review by

Founded by Roy Acuff and Fred Rose (partners in the major country music publisher Acuff-Rose), Hickory had chart success for several decades running, but didn't have much in the way of a trademark sound. This collection of a dozen hit singles spans 1956-1978, including Acuff's 1965 cover of "Freight Train Blues" (his only track on the compilation), a couple of rootsy '50s sides from Wilma Lee & Stoney Cooper, and some odds and ends from Don Gibson (including a duet with Sue Thompson), Ernie Ashworth, Glenn Barber, and others. It's mostly OK pop-country, but not something that would exert a great pull on prospective buyers, although it collects a few singles that aren't so easy to find elsewhere.
