Things can get a bit confusing in the Buddy Holly discography since he released material both as a solo artist and with his backup band the Crickets during his lifetime. Contrary to popular belief, members of the Crickets did not sing harmony for Holly. That task fell to the Picks (John Pickering, Bill Pickering, and Bob Lapham), although they were not credited at the time. Some 30 years later, in the mid-'80s, a reconstituted Picks sang new harmony over Holly master tapes and the results are reissued here on this three-disc collection. It is difficult to call any of this essential, and while no one would deny the Picks a second shot at lost possibilities, in the end this is revisionist pop history and probably only of interest to Hollyophiles.
