With so many powerful albums in Dennis Brown's repertoire, albums like THE GENERAL are too quickly overlooked. This surprisingly mature effort has Brown exploring his lovers rock roots in a more contemporary style. While some Brown purists may prefer his older works, there's no denying the unique, bubbling quality of these eight tunes.
Produced by Lloyd Chambers, THE GENERAL features a lineup of relatively unknown, but talented, musicians. "My Girl," "Green Green Grass of Home," and "Never Never" are all fine, light lovers tracks that may not have "Cassandra"-level notoriety, but are still well worth investigating. "Concrete Jungle," the album's sole roots cut and probably the best song on the album, is also a nice addition to Brown's extensive catalog. Brown's voice is in fine style throughout and as lyrically strong on this album as any other he recorded during the same era.
