The Funches of Us Review

by Marcy Donelson

The Funches of Us is the debut comedy album from sweet-miened Ron Funches, co-star of the NBC sitcom Undateable. A standup comedian with nearly a decade of performing under his belt by the time the show was recorded at Denver's Comedy Works in August 2015, he'd also accrued film, television, and writing credits, including staff work on the Comedy Central sketch series Kroll Show. Here, topics including pop culture (Ludacris, Muppet Babies), past service jobs, smoking pot, racism, and regional U.S. cultures are all juggled gracefully with his often-silly, always-warm ribbing. Highlights include "Wear Yo' Scarf," in which he considers one possible acceptable use of "the N word," and "Not Tough," where he admits that he "giggles like an Asian princess." Explicit content is delivered with a radiant smile that's palpable through audio.
