This 50-tune compilation features a wonderful selection of music from the Blue Note label's vast catalog. Given the label's year of origin, and the thousands of recordings they've issued, this is obviously a small sample, but it is a representative one. There are cuts by legendary jazz artists such as Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, Cannonball Adderley, Lou Donaldson, Horace Silver, Stanley Turrentine, Lee Morgan, Sidney Bechet, and Albert Ammons, from the classic jazz era of the 1930s through the early '60s. They are featured alongside music by the current crop of artists in the label's stable: Norah Jones, Jacky Terrasson, Joe Lovano, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, and Cassandra Wilson. The title, The Finest in Jazz Since 1939, says it all.
