George Benson was already a well-established and lauded jazz guitarist with a long discography when he began recording for Warner Bros. Records in the late '70s, and it was at Warner Bros. that he began to feature his vocals more as a complement to his guitar playing, a move that brought him repeatedly to the pop charts in the ensuing years, particularly after he moved to the Qwest Records imprint and released his breakthrough pop album, the Quincy Jones-produced Give Me the Night, in 1980. This set chronicles those Warner Bros. years just prior to Give Me the Night, and it shows Benson as a fine guitarist (always evident every step of his career) but also as an increasingly confident and capable pop singer.
