AllMusic Review by

The music on this Baldwin Street CD was all previously unreleased. The great Ella Fitzgrald is heard during four radio broadcasts from Birdland, along with a few selections from the Apollo Theater and Basin Street. One broadcast is a bit odd because Ella was being heckled a bit by a noisy audience that wanted to hear some requests she was not planning on performing. Otherwise the minisets run pretty smooth with Ella (mostly accompanied by the Hank Jones Trio) heard in prime form on such numbers as "Flying Home," "How High the Moon," "Air Mail Special," "Lemon Drop," and a variety of ballads. The only real fault to this set are that the extensive and quite informative liner notes are rather microscopic. But overall this CD adds some light to a somewhat neglected period (her later Decca years) in Ella Fitzgerald's career.
