Early Ministry Years is actually a straight repackaging of Carman's first two albums: 1973's Sunday's on the Way and the 1983 breakthrough Some-o-Dat. While his message is clear throughout both albums, Carman is continually plagued by chintzy, even embarrassing, arrangements that ultimately dilute his cause. There's no doubt that the emphasis on message over music is deliberate. But as Carman has positioned himself a singer and performer -- and not simply as a preacher -- there should have been an effort to make his music less head-scratchingly awful.
