Upon first listen, De Magia Veterum appears to be indulging in nothing more than gratuitous chaos and cacophony (again) on its third studio album, 2011's The Divine Antithesis, but there's actually a highly sophisticated musical plan behind all this. Really. When it comes to this sort of counter-intuitive, mind-boggling, and maniacally intense musical endeavor, you either get it or you don't; so unless you have the time and patience (and health!) to sift through a ceaseless blur of aural overkill in search of the De Magia Veterum's obscure and nihilistic, but very real and very carefully thought-out game plan, your time is certainly better spent elsewhere. To clear things up a little, it's fair to say that those willing to take the plunge will face such horrors as discordant riffs, shrieking keyboards, bowel-loosening bass, hyperactive percussion (of both a blastbeat-steady nature and grindcore/jazz-like unpredictability), capped by alternately terrifying screams and sickening grunts, all of them stating and restating untold blasphemies against J.C. (is that him we see, surrounded by horn-blowing archangels while floating tits-up on the album cover? Why, yes, so it would seem). Such are the inner workings of the twisted mind of De Magia Veterum's one-man musical apocalypse. Approach with caution.
