AllMusic Review by

New Orleans-styled trumpeter Ken Colyer is heard at the peak of his powers throughout this highly recommended CD reissue. During this period of time, his sextet included trombonist Mac Duncan, clarinetist Ian Wheeler, banjoist Johnny Bastable, either Dick Smith or Ron Ward on bass, and Stan Grieg or Colin Bowden on drums; pianist Ray Foxley joined the group in 1958. The 14 selections on the set all feature strong musicianship, the influence of the George Lewis and Kid Ory bands, plenty of ensembles and colorful solos. In addition to New Orleans standards, a special treat is several versions of rags including "Heliotrope Bouquet," "The Entertainer," and "Sensation." One of the best Ken Colyer collections currently available.
