AllMusic Review by

Since Rosanne Cash was always classified as a country artist, at least in record stores and by critics, it seems a little strange that there is a budget-line collection from Sony Music Special Projects entitled The Country Side, but such concerns seem like quibbling when faced with a disc as entertaining as this. Essentially, this is a covers record -- out of the ten featured songs, she wrote only one, "My Old Man" -- and her versions of "It Hasn't Happened Yet," "Right or Wrong," "Third Rate Romance," "That's How I Got to Memphis," "You Don't Have Very Far to Go," "My Baby Thinks He's a Train" and two of her dad's songs, "Tennessee Flat Top Box" and "Big River," reveal what an inventive, engaging performer she is. Such revelations are completely unexpected with budget-line compilations such as this, which is exactly why it's so welcome.
