The 13 selections on this 1998 sampler are drawn from seven of guitarist Laurindo Almeida's Concord recordings. The Brazilian acoustic player is mostly heard in quiet trios with bassist Bob Magnusson and several different drummers performing material that ranges from "Liza" to "Slaughter on Tenth Avenue," "Unaccustomed Bach" and "Chopin A La Breve." Changes of pace are offered by three quartet numbers that match Almeida with the highly compatible guitarist Charlie Byrd and a classical piece ("Invocation to Shango") that has Almeida, Byrd and the third guitar of Carlos Barbosa-Lima in a quintet. A good introduction to Laurindo Almeida's later period.
