AllMusic Review by

Prior to Bluebird's five-CD set, this French RCA series was the best way to acquire Jelly Roll Morton's Victor recordings. The very well-recorded two-LP set (the first of four) includes some of Morton's finest recordings, all taken from his 1926-27 Chicago sessions. "Black Bottom Stomp" (with its constantly changing instrumentation) is a marvel and other classics on this set include "The Chant," "Steamboat Stomp," "Grandpa's Spells," "Doctor Jazz," "Beale Street Blues," "The Pearls," "Wolverine Blues" and "Mister Jelly Lord." Key sidemen include cornetist George Mitchell, trombonist Kid Ory, and clarinetists Omer Simeon and Johnny Dodds.
