AllMusic Review by

During 1930-1932, the worst years of the Depression, the Durium label had a special "Hit of the Week" series of recordings put out on cardboard (using vinyl) and sold at newsstands rather than record stores. Some of the releases were as lengthy as five minutes and, although the cardboard could warp, the recording quality was excellent and, under proper care, the records were quite durable. Archeophone, in a series that for them is much more "modern" than usual, is reissuing all of the label's output (including some previously unreleased performances) on four double CDs of which this is the second volume. While the emphasis during these performances by the studio bands is on the melody (one can always hear the theme), the dance band renditions often have brief hot solos, usually by a trumpeter after the vocal. Most of the personnel is lost to history but such notables as trumpeter Manny Klein, Hawaiian guitarist Andy Sanella, and Harry Reser on banjo and guitar are among those making appearances. There is also a very rare title featuring singer Eva Taylor and a very good piano solo from the unknown Leola Felton on "St. Louis Blues." Overall, this was the type of music that was listened to after the roaring 1920s ended and before swing took over in 1935, the music of the "dime store dance bands." This reissue series is perfectly done and highly recommended to music historians and fans of the era.
