The Complete Benny Goodman, Vol. 2 (1935-1936) Review

by Scott Yanow

The second two-LP set in this eight-volume series has all of Benny Goodman's Victor studio sides that were recorded during a seven-month period when the orchestra consolidated and built on its unexpected success. In addition to such popular recordings as "When Buddha Smiles," "Stompin' at the Savoy," and "Goody Goody," there are six selections by the Benny Goodman Trio, many enjoyable vocals from Helen Ward (the best of BG's many singers), and four hot numbers by a combo under Gene Krupa's leadership that match the clarinetist with trumpeter Roy Eldridge and tenor great Chu Berry. Essential music in one form or another.
