The Columbia Years Review

by Thom Jurek

True North does the public a service in North America and in Europe by placing together in one handy slipcase box all four of singer/songwriter/guitarist Colin Linden's Columbia albums that were released between 1988 and 2000. While none of these has been available in the United States, Linden's native Canada gets a renewed shot at purchasing these, as do fans in England and the British Isles since they were deleted from the catalog as single volumes. Each one of these discs is the remastered version and all contain bonus tracks where available. Linden's records have always been wide-ranging affairs with lots of friends and musical family including artists like Stephen Fearing and Bruce Cockburn joining in. Linden's songs are the very best of the singer/songwriter fare that's been on display on North American shores. He's funny, poignant, caustic, intimate, and reasoned, yet his passion always come shining through like a beacon. Linden's also a poet of the guitar and is well known for his axe-slinging abilities. This set is offered for a great price point, and the transfers sound terrific.
