The number of artists who appear on both the 1973 and 1974 volumes of The Collection: The Hits Of... illustrates the limitations of this budget-line series from Sony Music Distribution. Sony's sources fall strictly within its domain -- there's nothing licensed from Warner, for instance -- so there's not a tremendous amount of range from disc to disc. As on The Collection: The Hits of 1973, the 1974 volume features David Essex ("Gonna Make You a Star"), Mott the Hoople ("The Golden Age of Rock 'n' Roll"), and John Denver ("Annie's Song"). The biggest hits here include Terry Jacks' "Season in the Sun," the Hues Corporation's "Rock the Boat," and Rick Derringer's "Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo."
