A rather diverse selection of down-tempo electronica, the Italian Irma label's The Chill Out Juxebox functions effectively as laid-back ambient music, but isn't entirely engaging otherwise. It's a rather enigmatic problem: How can music be both peripheral and non-intrusive yet at the same time captivating? Well, the artists featured here don't exactly solve the problem and seem content producing soothing music rather than interesting music. And listeners who don't mind the fact that much of this music leaves little impression after its sonic aura dissipates will find this quite capable of satisfying their chilling-out needs. But those looking for a creative statement that dares to tread on the dogmatic boundaries of techno or house, or simply music that dares to head in new directions, will most likely walk away disappointed.
