AllMusic Review by

A jazzy, exploratory journey into the world of post-rock, Sola isn't so much an experimental vehicle so much as a throwback to the progressive Western pop of the Moody Blues. Although far more jazz-influenced than the '70s psychedelic band, they maintain a similar meandering approach to their music that integrates hidden melodies into a seemingly structure-free setup. Thus, instruments dance around one another in odd patterns while a pattern slowly develops and carries the track to its natural conclusion. Although uninhibited by traditional songwriting, the band does fall back on several jazz techniques that give the music an air of familiarity. Sola's debut is a welcome addition to the world of post-rock, if only because it explores the corners of the expected, delivering unsurprising sounds that get their power from the layers they discover underneath the music.
