AllMusic Review by

This two CD collection, which was originally featured as part of the Blue Note Records 60th Anniversary boxed set, documents Alfred Lion's first tentative steps toward the avant-garde. Eric Dolphy, Andrew Hill, and Sam Rivers are featured here, as well as some of the more experimental work by Jackie McLean. The then-revolutionary Ornette Coleman sounds fresh and clear in these recordings, and Don Cherry's "There is the Bomb" is a unique treat.
