This album features the University of Kentucky pep band running through favorites both old and new. Recorded in a studio, there isn't quite the spark of the band's lively basketball game performances. However, it will certainly put any Wildcat fan in the mood. Naturally, the album begins with "On! On U of K," and continues through the sentimental favorite "My Old Kentucky Home." "Kentucky Fight!" and the brief, boisterous trumpet and trombone cheers will be equally rousing for the faithful, while "Hey Song" and "Austin Powers" are better-known by their real names, "Rock & Roll, Pt. 2," and "Soul Bossa Nova." "Love Shack" and the Bar-Kays classic "Soul Finger" might be the best things here -- the snappy drum fills and percolating, layered horn arrangements are augmented by gang interjections from the bandmembers themselves, giving the tracks the energy of a packed Rupp Arena in late March. Best of the UK Pep Band also includes Kentucky governor Albert B. "Happy" Chandler's reverent, a cappella version of "My Old Kentucky Home," recorded live at the arena before a game.
