It figures that it took a British label to assemble a single label collection by American artists, but here it is. For those who don't know, Solar is the acronym for "Sounds of Los Angeles Records." They were responsible for some of the better latter-day soul and funk from the late '70s through the early to mid-'80s. Check the track list and you'll find classics like 1978's smash single "Take That to the Bank" by Shalamar, the deep funk of Lakeside's "Fantastic Voyage," Midnight Star's "Headlines," the Whispers "Rock Steady" and about a dozen others. There are decent if not deeply researched liner notes, and the sound, especially for CDs at the time, is terrific.
