AllMusic Review by

The Best of Sacramento features performances by most of the key gangsta rappers that have put the city on the map as one of the world's epicenters for nihilistic gangsta rap. In particular, the performances by C-Bo and Brotha Lynch Hung should attract some attention to this compilation, even if many of the featured rappers are fairly unknown. Furthermore, fans of Black Market recordings should adore this collection as it is focused primarily on that label. The capital of California, Sacramento isn't nearly the metropolis or major urban center that Los Angeles and San Francisco are, yet the city's gangsta rap scene rivals either of these cities. Unfortunately, there haven't been any Sacramento rappers that have yet broken out of the underground. The city's strictly underground status has not so much to do with talent but rather with accessibility; these rappers don't merely retread traditional gangsta themes, instead taking the genre into darker and more morbid terrain than it has yet ventured with the exception of crazed artists such as Esham or Three Six Mafia. No record on the market better sums up the trademark style of malevolent gangsta rap that thrived in Sacramento in the '90s than this one.
