Here is a reissue of great historical importance: the only CD anthology of the classic recordings of Patsy Montana, the first female country artist to enjoy a million-seller ("I Want to Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart") and the preeminent woman in early hillbilly music after the Carter Family gals. The Best of Patsy Montana has 24 of her seminal Vocalion and Conqueror recordings spanning the years 1935-1940, concluding with "I Want to Be a Cowboy's Dreamgirl," a barely rewritten reprise of her big hit. "The She Buckaroo" displays a proto-feminist outlook that balances the cowboy worship of "I Want to Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart," but most of the remaining material consists of straight Western fare. Although a glimpse at the record charts may suggest that Montana was merely a one-hit wonder, The Best of Patsy Montana belongs in the collection of any serious enthusiast of early C&W music.
