The biggest beef with the Motorcity wannabes is the price; this costs more than a compilation of authentic Motown tracks, and casual fans may think they're getting the real deal. Vol. 4 consists mainly of tracks by unknowns with Motown associations: i.e., Louvain Demps (the Andantes), Marilyn McLeod (a songwriter), Sherrie Payne (the Supremes), Frances Nero (whose number 17 U.K. hit "Footsteps Following Me" -- not included here -- was Motorcity's best seller), Lois Reeves (Martha's sister), and Frankie Gaye (Marvin's brother). Curiosities include cuts by Jake Jacas (?) and Billy Gordon & C-Brand; Gordon was the Contours' original raspy lead singer, but passed long before these recordings were even conceived -- maybe the new outfit is led by Billy's son.
