Hot Club de Norvege raises the gypsy jazz flag with a collection of its best material and standards of the style. Also gathering beneath the unfurled banner are such guest European hot club jazz luminaries as Jimmy Rosenberg, Babik Reinhardt, Angelo Debarre, and the Vertavo String Quartet. Hot club jazz is string jazz: The arrangements are with acoustic guitars and/or violins. The rhythm section is usually string bass or even cello, without drums. The airy and bouncy melodies have a distinctive "outdoor" -- even "sunny" -- feel compared to the indoor club atmosphere garnered by typical stateside jazz. Inspired talent in thematic improvisation and roots in upbeat, wild folk traditions give this gypsy swing its unique style.
