Sequel/Castle released an extensive Flaming Ember set containing virtually all of the blue-eyed soul band's recorded work; but that's for the serious listener. The Best of Flaming Ember is for those who don't need to dig as deep, as well as those who want a compilation with the exhilarating single cut of "Westbound Number 9," the group's best song. Pared down to just singles and assorted album tracks, the group's psychedelic album rock flourishes are left behind, but that merely reveals what a fine group this is -- varied, soulful, melodic, and grittier than you'd expect.
