The title's a bit misleading, for although nothing the Duke ever produced was substandard, this is a long way from being definitive or even his very best. A ten-song budget disc that features four tracks with a septet, three with a quartet, and only three featuring the full Ellington orchestra. The material is great, however (maybe that's where this title's sobriquet comes from), and tracks like "In a Mellotone" and "Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue (The Wailing Interval)" certainly qualify as some of this musical giant's best.
