Culled from the tenor saxophonist's 1959-1960 output on Prestige, The Best of Arnett Cobb features strong cuts from such solid releases as Party Time, Smooth Sailing, and Movin' Right Along. The swing and bebop veteran wields his tenor with a hint of both Hawkins and Webster, but still delivers his own inimitable style on such highlights as "Black Velvet" and a revival of his '40s Lionel Hampton feature, "Flying Home." Helping out along the way are the stellar likes of Red Garland, Art Taylor, Ray Barretto, and George Duvivier. A fine introduction to an unsung giant.
