AllMusic Review by

The Rajon label's compilation of Ella Fitzgerald's late-'30s Decca recordings includes most of her best performances from that period, but few liner notes and odd compilation leave too many questions. Leading with her biggest early hit, "A-Tisket, A-Tasket," The 20 Most Requested cycles between novelties, standards, and swing exercises, with little attempt to tell Fitzgerald's story. (How else to reconcile placing "My Last Affair" right next to "The Muffin Man"?) Elsewhere Fitzgerald is heard in all her splendid diversity, from the disconsolate ballad "I Got It Bad (And That Ain't Good)" to the exuberant swing tune "You'll Have to Swing It (Mr. Paganini)."
