The 1949 Duke Ellington big band made few worthwhile studio recordings, which makes this LP (consisting of material from radio broadcasts) of great interest to Ellington collectors. Recorded at a time when Al Killian was leading the trumpet section and both Ben Webster and Al Sears were on tenor, this nearly one-hour set contains an extended version of "The Tattooed Bride," superior versions of "How High the Moon," "St. Louis Blues" (and even "Singin' in the Rain") and many fine solos from a somewhat forgotten version of Duke Ellington's orchestra.
