Although it does not state it anywhere on this CD reissue, the first ten selections were a former LP from 1987, while the remaining five cuts formed half of a W.C. Handy tribute album from around 1989. The Hot Cotton Jazz Band is a solid Dixieland band that enjoys bringing back lesser-known material, mixing in obscurities with occasional standards. The septet, featuring cornetist George Ryan, trombonist Clive Collins (who is replaced by Bill Bell on the Handy date), and clarinetist Bob Baker) has spirited ensembles and lively solos. Singer Ruby Wilson is a major asset on the Handy tunes. Easily recommended to traditional jazz fans.
