AllMusic Review by

A mid-priced release from MCA Special Products, this 14-song compilation of work by various Texas musicians in the Universal library covers at least three generations, in a multitude of styles and idioms, from Western swing (Bob Wills) to blues (Bobby "Blue" Bland) to rock & roll (Buddy Holly) and roots rock (Joe Ely), without ever offering less than a first-rate track. What's more, there's surprisingly thorough annotation and recording credits. As for the music, it would be difficult to deliver a less-than-fine collection that encompassed Big Mama Thornton doing "Hound Dog," Joe Ely's live, solo "Me and Billy the Kid," Ernest Tubb's "Waltz Across Texas," and Johnny Ace's "Pledging My Love," all in superb sound, to boot.
