AllMusic Review by

Hamburg-based producer Marco Niemerski (aka Tensnake) takes a rather unique and unusually accessible approach to house and techno music. His style has been termed "cosmic disco," which is as good a descriptor as any: steeped equally deeply in funky breaks, chilly techno, and classic house, he basically turns every track he touches into a warm and inviting celebration of funk, and if none of it ends up being terribly challenging (and in some cases maybe not even that interesting) -- well, hey, this is dance music, not a master's thesis. The first disc on his two-disc DJ mix for the Defected Records label keeps things fairly breaksy; the sonic textures are quite consistent (warm, pillowy, multicolored, with lots of dubwise vocal treatments defining large, open sonic spaces), and in fact are so consistent that even by continuous-mix standards it's sometimes almost impossible to detect the transitions between tracks. You end up realizing that an hour has passed and you barely noticed. The second disc is more explicitly house-based, but similar in texture and feel -- and it includes his genuine hit original song "Coma Cat" (in its original mix). Those who find house music tedious may find that Tensnake's approach gives them a different perspective on the tradition; those who already love it will find plenty to enjoy here.
