The seventh volume in the Techno Club series of trance albums is the first to not feature battling DJs. Past volumes matched up resident DJs from Techno Club, the Friday night party at the storied club Dorian Gray in Frankfurt. However, there aren't any featured DJs on this volume, there are featured clubs instead. Rather than hear, for example, Talla 2XLC go head-to-head with Taucher, you get to hear Techno Club, the most popular trance club in Germany, go head-to-head with Space, the most popular trance club in Ibiza. It's somewhat of a novel concept, albeit somewhat of a gimmick. What makes it such a gimmick is that there really isn't much of a difference between the Techno Club disc and the Space disc -- both feature the same sort of Frankfurt-style trance. What's arguably most disappointing, however, is that the tracks on this double-disc collection aren't mixed together DJ style. Instead, this is a traditional compilation with full-length versions of the tracks and gaps of silence in between. Granted, it's nice to hear the full-length version of songs for once, but dance music this intense and enveloping isn't nearly as effective in short bursts like this. The few seconds of silence in between songs really ruins a lot of this album's momentum. So, even if these are great tracks -- which they are -- the unmixed format of this particular volume in the Techno Club series makes it one of the least satisfying, if not the least satisfying volume in the long-running series.
