On this 2013 release from Nimbus Alliance, Yondani Butt leads the London Symphony Orchestra in solid performances of Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6 in B minor, "Pathétque," and Robert Schumann's Overture to Manfred, which is provided as filler. These works are typical of Butt's predominantly Romantic repertoire, and because this recording of the "Pathétique" comes rather quickly on the heels of his 2013 release of Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony, it might seem that Butt is rushing to corner the market on the great symphonic warhorses. This rendition is full-throated and passionate, and Butt and the ever-professional LSO turn in a great sounding recording that is the equal of most modern digital versions. Anyone who needs a decent CD of the Sixth that has every note in its place and delivers the music with powerful expressions, formal clarity, and balanced playing will find that this disc will serve their needs quite well. Yet the overwhelming number of available recordings of this symphony gives this disc serious competition, and the lack of any special interpretive features will likely keep this album flying under the critics' and listeners' radar.
